The Heritage Patriots baseball team ran their record to 5-0 overall, 1-0 in AAA North with a 5-2 victory over Pillow Academy last night in Greenwood. Junior Camp Pittman struck out six and scattered four hits to push his record to 3-0 with his second complete game of the season.

On a night when the Patriots’ hitters struggled to break the game open, the ability to manufacture runs paid big dividends. In the third inning, Bryant Bonner and Tyler Marchak were hit by pitches, and Parker Dunaway and Tyler Farnham drew walks to force in the first run of the game. In the top of the fifth, Marchak’s lead-off walk and steal of second led to Dunaway’s full-count run- scoring single as the Patriots took a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game. In the top of the seventh, Marchak drew another leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on Dunaway’s second full count run-scoring single of the night. After a walk to Tyler Farnham, Joey Kleis’ drag bunt single forced a throwing error that scored two more runs to bring the score to 5-2. Pittman worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh to shut the door on the Mustangs. The Patriots are scheduled to play the second and third games of the three-game divisional series in a double header at Heritage on Thursday evening at 5:00, weather permitting.

In the first JV game of the season, Marchak pitched three shutout innings and Patriot hitters used seven hits, six walks, and three hit by pitches to beat the Mustangs 10-5. Freshman Bryant Bonner had two singles to lead the visiting Patriots, who also got singles from 8th grader Thomas Degrange, freshmen Will Bonner and Dunaway, and sophomore Matthew LeBrun. Freshman Matt Sykes’ double in the second inning was the only extra base hit of the night. Heritage scored three runs in the first, one in the second, and six in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. Sykes came in to pitch in the fourth inning, effectively putting down a Mustang rally.

Today’s lunch is lasagna or chicken tenders, green beans, and whole kernel corn. Tomorrow’s lunch will be chicken spaghetti or beef tips on rice, glazed carrots, and field peas.

Heritage Academy’s raffle sale was a HUGE success. As a school we made more than $45,000! Due to our huge success, we will have the Monday after Easter Sunday off from school. We will also be having a free shoe week this week. Students may wear the shoes of their choice until tomorrow. Congratulations again on your hard work!

We will not have school this Friday due to the District Teachers Meeting. Students will begin Spring Break on Friday, March 12th.

Teachers need to check their texting boxes to ensure materials are available and ready. Everything has been ordered, just make sure that you have what you need and are ready to administer the tests after Spring Break.

The PTA meeting last night was a big success. We appreciate all those who were able to attend. Mrs. Davis did a wonderful job of displaying the student’s art work and announcing the award winners. Everyone should be proud of their hard work in art! We also appreciate Mr. Hurt talking about the internet. We all went home with new and useful information. The elementary dancers did a wonderful job! Congratulations on all your hard work. Your performance was super!

First grade will still be taking the OLSAT test today. Students need to be aware of this and need to be very quiet when inside the building. They do not need any distractions during their testing time. Thanks for your attention in this matter.

Jr. High Dance tryouts are just around the corner. All sixth grade girls interested in trying out for dance will need to attend the parent meeting on March 23. It will be held in the High School Library from 5:30-6:00. Dance tryouts will be held on April 1st. If you are interested in trying out, you can sign up in the elementary office. You can find more information on the school website.

***ACT WORKSHOP ***Mary Barnhill is doing an ACT workshop before the April ACT. The dates of the workshop are March 27, 28, April 2, & 3 from 1-4 pm each day. The cost is $125 and the registration deadline is Thursday, March 11. The workshop is for all high school students and HA will collect the registration forms and money. The Heritage Patriots baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 7-2 victory over Oak Hill Academy Thursday evening. Offensively, the Patriots were led by freshmen Parker Dunaway and James Clark and senior Cole Eller, with two hits apiece. Dunaway and fellow freshman Clark Atkins each had a double among Heritage’s eight-hit attack.

Heritage scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead. In the first, Dunaway led off with a single and scored on Clark’s RBI single two batters later. In the second, sophomore Tyler Marchak reached first on a one-out hit by pitch. He later scored on a fielder’s choice by Clark.

After the Raiders had closed the gap to 2-1 in the top of the third, the Patriots scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead. With one out, Eller singled. Clark followed with a double, and Marchak loaded the bases with his second hit by pitch of the evening. Dunaway then delivered a two-run double to extend the score to 4-1. Junior Tyler Farnham singled in Marchak, and Clark followed with his third RBI of the game with a single that scored Dunaway.

In the fourth, Junior DH Camp Pittman led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on Eller’s second single of the game, and scored on Atkins’ fielder’s choice, From there, the Patriots held on as James Clark gave up just a single run in the seventh inning to run his record to 2-0. Clark scattered six hits and struck out seven to record his first complete game of the season.

Defensively, the Patriots made several key plays, including throwing out three runners from the outfield. In the third, Eller gunned down a Raider runner attempting to advance from first to third on a single to right. In the fourth, Marchak halted a scoring threat by throwing out a runner at third. In the seventh, Marchak made a diving catch in shallow center field before doubling the runner off of first.

The Patriots will travel to Kirk Academy in Grenada today for a JV game beginning at 4:30, followed by a varsity contest at 6:00.
