Course Description: Chemistry is the first half of a general chemistry sequence designed for students that plan to major in engineering, science, health professions and other areas that require a solid foundation in chemistry. Atomic theory and structure, scientific method, scientific measurements, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, periodic table properties, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, nuclear chemistry, and intermolecular forces, will be covered.
Required Supplies: Scientific calculator (A TI-83+ or better calculator is recommended)
Guidelines for Successful completion of Chemistry:
  • Read the chapter in the textbook BEFORE class.
  • Attend all lectures, be on time and take good notes.
  • Work the sample problems within the chapters as well as problems at the end of the chapters.
  • Let me know if you are having difficulty grasping a concept.
  • Communicating with the teacher is the key in any course. I respond to all email within 12 hours on any workday, and within 24 hours on weekends.

Class Rules:
All rules outlined in the Heritage Academy Student Handbook will be followed in the chemistry classroom.
Additional safety guidelines will also be enforced on laboratory days. A sheet outlining all safety rules has been distributed to all students, before each lab specific safety guidelines will be stressed. Every lab day will require the following accommodations.

  • Closed toe and heel shoes (for boys and girls)
  • Pull back long hair
  • Wear approved splash-proof safety goggles
  • Absolutely no eating, not even breath mints
  • No horseplay
Any students that are noncompliant will be given an alternate graded assignment, or receive the appropriate disciplinary action.
All lab activities will be announced at least one day in advance.
