AP English Literature and Composition is designed to enable students to become proficient in all forms of written expression, to strengthen vocabulary, grammar usage and mechanics, and to further critical thinking skills. AP English is a survey of works of literary merit and includes study of all genres and eras by a wide-range of authors.

Students will write expository and analytical essays on specific literary works. There will also be a variety of creative writing assignments, including poetry and fiction. Essays are graded for content, structure, grammar, and mechanics. Students will also have a research paper first semester.

In order to strengthen vocabulary, which is important not only in speaking and writing, but also in preparation for the ACT, SAT, and AP exam, we will have weekly vocabulary quizzes. Throughout the year we will prepare for the AP exam using multiple-choice and essay questions from past AP exams.
