6th Grade

Sixth grade is a busy and exciting year for the students at Heritage Academy. Sixth grade serves as a bridging year from the elementary school to the junior high. Computers are as much a part of the classroom as traditional textbooks. Apple MacBooks are utilized in all curriculum areas. Technology serves to expand students’ horizons, but it does not take the place of personal interchanges, experiments, and hands-on learning. The sixth grade curriculum includes reading, spelling, English grammar, mathematics, social studies, and science. Reading includes basal readers and classroom novels; it is supplemented with the Reading Renaissance Accelerated Reader, a computer softwear program. We use the Houghton Mifflin Spelling and Vocabularytextbook; the list words can be accessed via the internet. The English program is taught in conjunctions with the reading series. Students write for various purposes across the curriculum. The sixth graders use Prentice Hall Mathematics, Course I. This series is in line with the seventh grade math program. Students math skills are reinforced, practiced, and mastered by each individual using the Accelerated Math computer program. Ancient history is the focus of social studies. Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science are emphasized in sixth grade. Field trips and a variety of guest speakers serve to enrich the curriculum. Students participate in special art, computer, music, and physical education classes. Students are provided with many opportunities to learn about themselves and learn respect and tolerance for others.
