College Action Plan

  • Continue to take challenging classes of the College Prep Curriculum
  • Enroll in Advance Placement courses
  • Job Shadow
  • Complete community service hours
  • Visit college fairs and get information about any colleges or universities that you may be interested in attending: Sept. 8 at Heritage, Sept. 14 at Birmingham….this one is HUGE Be sure to ask about admission requirements, financial aid, and deadlines
  • Go to any ACT or SAT workshops that are offered
  • Visit websites: college prep, financial aid, college search
  • Take the ACT and /or SAT .
  • Begin your portfolio. Consider a binder
  • Visit colleges, formally and informally
  • Meet with your counselor
  • Involve your parents with your websites and college search
  • Improve your grades
  • Update your resume
  • Letters of recommendation: teachers, counselors, employers, etc.
  • Prepare applications, write essays, and get people to write recommendations at least one month before the deadline for admission to the college or university of your choice
  • Retake the ACT, SAT, or SAT Subject Tests
  • Apply for financial aid as soon after January 1 as possible to get best results. You can visit www.mississippi.edu and go to Financial Aid or call 800-327-2980 to get specific financial aid information and deadlines
  • Know deadlines: college applications and scholarships,
  • Find scholarships: Locally (through Counseling Office)
