Elementary Morning Report

Good Monday morning! We are reporting live for WHAP and bringing you the latest Heritage Happenings for February 6, 2012.

Today’s lunch will be corndog nuggets or burger slammers, mac & cheese, and french fries. Tomorrow’s lunch will be turkey or ham sandwich, baked chips, and a cookie.

Student’s grades are available again through our new Power School program. Have your parents contact your teacher if you have any questions.

Heritage Academy Open House for prospective students will be held tonight. The elementary Open House will be from 5:30-6:30 and the high school Open House will begin at 6:30. All teachers need to be in attendance.

Students, don’t forget to be selling your tuition raffle tickets. The tickets will be sold for $20.00 a piece. Tickets will need to be turned in this Friday, February 10^th.

February 17^th will be a half day of school due to the District II AAA Basketball Tournament. After hours will be available. On that same day, students may show their support for the Mississippi Burn Foundation by bringing $1.00. The students that do bring $1.00 get to wear blue jeans to school that day. The money raised will go to help families of burn victims.

There will be no school on Monday, February 20^th, due to President’s Day.

The Bible verse for today is 1 Corinthians 13:4, “Love is patient, love is kind.”

Honor Society Ceremony

Heritage Academy will hold its annual Honor Societies’s Induction Ceremony on Sunday, November 13 at 2:00 PM in the SAB. Parents and honored guests of those students being inducted are cordially invited to attend.

Kisses for Callie February 11th

LAI Social Club presents:
“Kisses for Callie”
Friday February 11, 2011

Students can wear HA t-shirt (red, white, pink) and jeans if they bring $1. Also LAI members will be selling “kisses” (Hershey’s) with lip tattoos for $1. Special prize for the student in each grade with the most “kisses”. 25% of the proceeds raised will be donated to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center in honor of Callie Dunaway.

Last year the LAI Social Club donated $500 to the University of Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Center in honor of Callie Dunaway. Callie is a 2001 graduate of Heritage Academy, and her brother Parker is a member of the class of 2013. Callie was diagnosed with a brain tumor in August of 2009, and after 15 months of treatment at UAB she is now in remission. Her cancer doctor at UAB, Burt Nabors, was a 1981 graduate of Heritage Academy.

5th Grade Students Collect for Helping Hands

Heritage Academy 5th Grade Students recently collected canned food items for Helping Hands and delivered them to the local agency. Pictured are representatives from each class:

WCBI Weatherman Visits 6th Grade

On October 6, 2010, the sixth grade students of Heritage Academy had the pleasure of having Mr. Jason Dunning come to our classroom. Mr. Dunning is the weatherman or meteorologist for WCBI. We have been learning about weather in our science class, such as air masses and tornadoes. Mr. Dunning told us some interesting information on weather and his job as a meteorologist. He presented us with a slide show and even drew on the whiteboard to help us better understand the concepts.

We are so thankful for his visit. He made weather easy to understand. One interesting fact he told us was that after they had used the letter Z in the alphabet for hurricane names, they had to go into the Greek alphabet.

Grading Scale for Heritage Academy Upper School beginning 2010-11

After careful review and adoption by the Board of Directors, Heritage Academy will change from the current irregular grading scale to a ten point grading scale for grades seven through twelve at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. This will enable the graduates of Heritage Academy to compete on a level playing field for scholarship monies and various college placement awards. This change will not alter a student’s numerical grade, course rigor or the academic integrity of the school. The change will be retro-active for grades 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 for the 2010-11 school year.
