Greg Carlyle grew up in Thompson, Manitoba, Canada and later attended Ridley College, an independent co-educational boarding school in St. Catharine’s, Ontario. Following the completion of a biology degree at the University of Guelph, Carlyle served two years as a missionary in Costa Rica teaching science at the International Christina School. It was in Costa Rica that he met his wife Ann Marie Buckner, a Starkville native, who was teaching as well.

The 2015-2016 school year marks his 17th year as a school administrator, having served as both an elementary and a high school principal in Philadelphia, MS. Carlyle believes, “there’s a leader in every student, and as an educator, my goal is to find that leader. It’s up to us to guide and direct and lead them.” Carlyle holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Mississippi State University. He and his wife Ann Marie, have three children: Alex, Andrew, and Emma.
