Summer Reading Requirement

May 18th, 2009 | By admin | Category: Academics, Heritage News

Dear Heritage Parents:

At the bottom of this post you will find the summer reading requirement for your child’s English course for next year. Please note that honors students are required to read two novels and Advanced Placement students are required to read three novels. Students will be required to keep a journal on each book assigned. These journals will be due on the first full day of classes. Specific instructions for the journals are included with this letter. At some time during the first full week of school, there will be some form of assessment on the novels the students were assigned. These assessments will count as major grades for the first nine weeks. While the grades on the assigned novels are important, the priority is for the students to read the works; therefore, if a student does not score a passing grade on the assessment, he/she will be assigned to seventh period study hall until the reading, writing, and assessment requirements are met. Grades will be reduced by ten points each time the assessment is not successfully completed.

For your convenience summer books may be purchased through the school beginning June 1, 2009, until the supply is exhausted or they may be purchased at Books-A-Million.

Students who register after July 15, 2009, must complete the reading requirement and journal by September 30, 2009, and be ready for the assessment.

Please encourage your child to complete his/her reading assignment, and please check with your child to see that his requirement is met. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Robbie Bobitt

English Department Chairman
